Chapter XXI
ON THE WAY TO JERUSALEM
Simeon and Jacob stood by the dock every time the ship made port to assure that none of the grain was offloaded in the wrong port. The ship stopped in Rhegium across from Sicilia and then traveled to Syracuse, then to Corinth and, avoiding the islands in the Aegean Sea, to Caesarea. The crew was efficient and honest and no cargo was delivered to the wrong port.
One night, however, the seas grew rough between Corinth and Caesarea. All three land lovers struggled with seasickness. It was rough for only six hours, but Rachel could not keep food down for three days until they reached port in Caesarea. Simeon and Jacob worried about her but she was fine once she had her land legs and kept some water down. âI never want to go anywhere by ship again,â was her final comment about the sea leg of the trip.
As Simeon and Jacob walked toward the shore on the dock with Rachel, Simeon spotted his older brother. Enoch stood tall and even though his beard and hair were white as snow and his face ruddy, his body was strong, and he seemed young and vital. The brothers broke into tears and held each other in a long embrace. Neither man thought he would ever see his brother again. There was much to do and much to talk about.
Once the cargo was unloaded, the caravan of Arabs arrived with their camels, loaded the animals and headed southeast to Jerusalem. Originally Jacob had planned for Enoch, Simeon and Rachel to travel by camel also. But since Rachel was just getting over her seasickness, he went ahead of them with the caravan and allowed Rachel, Simeon and Enoch to travel by horse accompanied by a friend. It allowed them to travel at their own pace, stop when they needed to and visit with each other.
As Jacob helped the three older ones onto their horses they took one last look at the Great Sea, each with a different feeling. Enoch, the fisherman, who saw it as a living; Simeon as a source of adventure; and Rachel who hoped to never see it again.
